Wet clay

Eleven years ago, this pot grew from a lump of clay into this form. I often am not certain what i am going to throw when I start. This is not a Michelangelo “I find the figure hidden in the marble”, artistic approach. It is more practical– “what can I make the clay do this time?” The first picture is the pot’s first form, before drying. trimming the base, fully drying and being bisque fired.

The second picture is from the raku firing done in the driveway at my old house at lake Barcroft. Raku firings are fun, immediate, flashy, and dangerous. I used a white glaze made to crackle and left blank areas with no glaze. The cracks and the bare areas become black from embedded smoke.

Later, a clear spray seals the pot and helps retain colors (if any) and give it a nice feel and sheen.

This pot is in my house on a prominent ledge above the great room and reminds me every day to get back in the studio.
